Background : Palliative care is an essential aspect of care for patients with chronic and life-threatening illnesses, directed toward alleviating the burden of symptoms, easing illness discomfort, and focuses mainly on improving the quality of life of the patient and their family. Aim : To assess nurses’ knowledge, attitude and difficulties towards palliative care. Method: A descriptive , cross sectional design was applied to a convenience sample of 85 nurses working in medical units at King Abdulaziz University Hospital. Tool: The Palliative Care Knowledge for Nursing (PCQN), Frommelt Attitudes Toward Care of the Dying (FATCOD) scale and Palliative Care Difficulty Scale ( PCDS) including demographic and work-related items were utilized. Result: Nearly two thirds of the nurses had poor palliative care knowledge, especially regarding the philosophy and principles as well as the psychosocial and spiritual aspects of palliative care . More than two thirds of the nurses had a positive attitude toward palliative care. Nearly half of the nurses reported a moderate level of difficulty in providing palliative care. Furthermore, there was no significant difference between demographic characteristics and knowledge, attitudes and difficulties toward palliative care. Conclusions : This study highlights a significant knowledge gap despite generally positive attitudes toward palliative care, as well as a moderate level of difficulty in providing such care. Nurses have inadequate knowledge of palliative care, suggesting a need to establish regular/continuous professional educational courses on palliative care .Therefore, further research is required to develop interventions that improve knowledge and attitudes toward palliative care among nurses.
