Imām al-Bayhaqi’s book As-Sunan al-Kubra is regarded by many scholars as one of the most important Hadith books, in it he provides a multitude of validations of hadiths in various ways, such as declaring different narrators.
This Study aims to highlight these Hadiths and identifying Imām al-Bayhaqi’s intention for declaring the difference between narrators, and distinguishing the accurate narrated version of those hadiths and uprooting inaccurate ones. This study also aims to identify the impact of different narrations by different narrators and its relation to the validation of hadiths, this is in order to deduce Imām al-Bayhaqi’s process in displaying the differences.
The thesis is divided into two separate parts after the introduction, the first part: includes defining the difference between narrators of hadith, and its link to validating them. This part also identifies the approach utilised by Imām al-Bayhaqi in his display of the differences between narrators and distinguishing clues of the right narrated version of hadiths.
The second part includes an applied study, which discusses the Hadiths that Imām al-Bayhaqi stated had different narrators.
Moreover, this second part will also outlay the methodology that this study adopted is an applied method that was utilised to study those Hadiths. This is in terms of how those Hadiths were documented, what was said about their narrators. It will also discuss what the scholars’ provisions regarding those different narrators and their character in their scholarly work, which helps in identifying the degree of difference between narrations, its effect and the correct version of the narrated Hadith.
Evidently, this study has reached multiple findings most prominently of these are as follows:
1- The study of the differences between narrators can reveal inaccuracies and by employing this method Imām al-Bayhaqi has validated and ample amount of Hadiths in his book.
2- One of the most important aims of Imām al-Bayhaqi is to reveal the accurate version of Hadith through displaying the differences between narrators and their narrations.
3- Imām al-Bayhaqi has repeatedly pointed to the difference in narrations between trusted and confident narrators in order to note that some of them have unwittingly erred in their narrations, thus revealing that differences provide clues to identify errs of Hadith narrated by trusted narrators.
4- Imām al-Bayhaqi adjudicates based on the clues and deductive reasoning that reveals to him from either the condition of the Hadith or its narrator or considering the other narrated versions.
5- One of the methods of revealing the unwetted errs, particularly from trusted narrators, is pointing to versions of Hadith narrated by only one narrator that contradicts validation clues.
6- Revealing Imām al-Bayhaqi’s approach in displaying the different narrations of Hadiths and their classifications.
7- Imām al-Bayhaqi’s aim in displaying the differences is validating the narration every which possible way because of the unreliability of the narrator- narration sourcing -. |
