Abstract : This thesis involves the enhancement of the conventional Newton-Raphson load flow algorithm be incorporating the appropriate models of flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) devices. The thesis also proposes an algorithm for the determination of the optimal location of the FACTS devices. The optimal power load flow algorithm so developed is then utilized for the load flow analysis of the Saudi 380 kV power grid to investigate the effectiveness of these optimally located FACTS devices on the system performance. Power systems were controlled by connected mechanical devices. Today, power systems control has become simple to control through power electronic devices of high voltage levels. Hence by new controllers of Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), the problems in transmission line system for voltage stability results will be better than before. In 1980 the conception of FACTS controllers discussed by Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).The aim of FACTS devices such as Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC), Thyristor Controlled Series Compensators (TCSC), etc.., to controlling the power system control. Therefore, the new modeling of power system required to be modified by including FACTS devices accordingly. Therefore, in this thesis, research work has been carried out with an objective to develop efficient algorithms for both normal and optimal power flow with optimal locations for connecting FACTS devices. The ordinary equations of power flow and optimal power flow are added to new control variables by using FACTS devices Power flow is consider a function of impedance in transmission line, it is consist of the voltage magnitude of sending and receiving end and the phase shift between the voltages. Through controlling any variables of power flow, directly the real and reactive power flow will be under control. However, the placement of FACTS devices in the grid it is important to get effective control and higher performance. Hence, it is important that proper placement strategy must be followed before the installation of any such devices. However, FACTS devices are play major role in controlling power flows, reducing generation cost and improve power system stability. In addition, the placement of a FACTS device depends primarily on the objective. There are many literatures have been showed how to make optimal locations with use sensitivity analysis method. Hence the real losses of specific line or total system can be reduce by several sensitivity indices with optimal placement options. This research work, utilizes static discernment based on the following aims such as reducing the real loss in specific line (PLl), reducing the total real loss for the system (PLT), reducing the real performance index (PI) and minimum system generation cost and /or minimum of total real power transmission losses. Suitable methods to determine the optimal locations of TCSC and UPFC have been suggested in this research. The method is based on the sensitivity of first three objectives mentioned above. If the objective of FACTS device placement is to provide minimum the total generation cost /or minimum of the total real losses for the system, the devices may be placed randomly by trial and-error.
