This study aims to investigate the linguistic level appropriate to those non-native
speakers of Arabic language; and highlight through its chapters the linguistic level(s)
which are appropriate to the various purposes of Arabic learners. In its three
chapters, the study shed light on the different and various viewpoints of the subject
matter. To achieve the objectives of the study, it has two sides. The first side is
concerned about the levels of Arabic language, while the second side is concerned
about identification of the linguistic level of learners. First, the levels of Arabic
language is considered. Then, identification has been made upon theoretical, applied
and field study. Chapter I has handled the linguistic levels of Arabic Language.
Chapter I has been concerned with the concept, origin, and the issue of spread and
recession. Causes have been demonstrated in terms of the poor model of pure Arabic
language over the linguistic arena of Arabic – showing that such model is an ideal
standard model and is rarely found in the daily life nowadays. When investigating
the pure version of Arabic language, the study shed light on the outstanding
important role of Arabic academies to support the Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)
and provide it with the necessary modern terms. The Contemporary MSA has a
different modern level especially when compared to classical Arabic. Colloquial
versions are commonly used and spread – in addition to being the nearest version to
daily life. However, the colloquial versions are in breach to the rule which is strictly
adhered to in pure version of Arabic. The study has also highlighted the features of
change and development occurred to Arabic language in a fourth topic thanks to its
relation to classifications and categorization characterized by languages such as
Arabic language. Chapter II is dedicated to the purposes of learning Arabic language
among non-native Arabic speakers. Chapter II has started with definition of the
modern trends in language learning. Then, the chapter highlighted the motives
behind learning and needs of Arabic non-speakers to learn such a language. The
chapter has also demonstrated the significance of selecting a level rather than
another; shown the linguistic content in the textbooks in terms of grammar and
language. Then, purposes of the scholars have been classified into religious,
economic and general – which is communication with Arabic speakers. Such
classification would contribute to organizing and codifying their linguistic needs and
requirements. Chapter III is concerned with the applied and field aspect of the study.
It has two topics. The first topic is to evaluate the prescribed textbooks in the Arabic
Learning Institute for Arabic non-speakers in King Abdul Aziz University. It is “AlArabya Bayna Yadayk: Student Textbook (3)”. The first topic evaluates the
aforementioned textbook in terms of the level to which the language of such texts is
affiliated. The second topic is concerned with a questionnaire to the students enrolled
in the institute. The questionnaire is concerned with their objectives, the Arabic and
linguistic levels they are willing to achieve – since they are interested in learning
Arabic language. The study has concluded that Arabic language is currently in a
condition of recession and conflict; and it has nothing to do but to exert much effort
in the fields of media and education. The study further concluded that the level of
Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) for being easy, resilient and coping to the present
developments is considered the optimal level not only for non-native Arabic speakers
but also for the life in general. Among the most important recommendations of the
study is to approve the appropriate linguistic level which is the Modern Standard
Arabic (MSA) when choosing the content of books for non-native Arabic speakers,
for those who don`t want to learn for religious purpose. |
