Abstract
:
Contrary to what Max Weber claims, the Islamic Law is not a barrier to a rational economic development if all parties involved in the economic activity implement the Islamic Work Ethic (IWE) code. However, despite its significance in the workplace, IWE has received little attention in Western scientific journals. In this study the researcher attempts to provide a sociological analysis of the IWE. An examination of the Holy Qur’an (the book of God revealed to Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him [PBUH]) and the Sunnah (the recorded sayings and behavior of Muhammad [PBUH]) shows that the IWE places a great value on work and on involvement in entrepreneurship, and calls upon everyone to seek work and acquire the necessary knowledge and skills. Individuals are commanded by the IWE to be truthful, honest, professional, and sincere in their work. The IWE emphasizes fairness in all transactions and upholds the rights of employees and employers. Such a work-ethic code can and is capable of organizing and regulating the conducts and relationships of the many different individuals and groups in the workplace for the good of all.
